Types of Electrified Vehicles

An electric vehicle (EV) (also known as a battery electric vehicle, or BEV) can be powered by an electric motor that draws electricity from a battery and is capable of being charged from an external source.

ev_chargerCharging

  • Rapidly expanding public charging network with increasing charging speeds
  • Most EVs are transitioning to the NACS plug (AKA the "Tesla Plug") which will open the Tesla Supercharger network to all
  • At-home charging means you have a "full tank" every morning.

swap_driving_apps_wheelDriving Experience

  • Smooth and quiet ride with instant torque and fast acceleration
  • Customizable driving modes for every road condition
  • Most EVs feature "one-pedal driving" by blending in regenerative braking when lifting off the accelerator pedal

account_balanceIncentives

  • Federal, state, and local governments may offer tax credits/deductions and rebates
  • Most incentives vary by location, income level, and vehicle model
  • Utility companies may offer specialized electric rate plans to minimize costs while charging overnight

battery_status_goodMaintenance

  • Fewer moving parts means less mechanical failure points
  • Lower maintenance costs--no oil changes and reduced brake wear
  • Many software updates can be provided "over the air" (OTA) without visiting the dealer

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) use batteries to power an electric motor and another fuel, such as gasoline, to power an internal combustion engine (ICE). PHEV batteries can be charged using a wall outlet or charging equipment, by the ICE, or through regenerative braking.

Hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) are powered by an internal combustion engine in combination with one or more electric motors that use energy stored in batteries. An HEV cannot plug in to off-board sources of electricity to charge the battery.

Mild hybrids (MHEV) use a battery and electric motor to help power the vehicle and can allow the engine to shut off when the vehicle stops (such as at traffic lights or in stop-and-go traffic), further improving fuel economy. Mild hybrid systems cannot power the vehicle using electricity alone.

Hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) use a propulsion system similar to that of electric vehicles, where energy stored as hydrogen is converted to electricity by the fuel cell. They only emit water vapor and warm air.
